Opening Key Session
At the Nexus of Innovation, Technology and Learning—What Are the Lessons from Silicon Valley?
Here we are a stone’s throw from Silicon Valley, the epicenter of entrepreneurship and innovation. The perennial technology questions on our minds as senior advancement officers include: What’s the next big thing? How will it affect what I do, how I live and how I work? What will I need to know to succeed in a new environment?
Google changed the way we think about gathering information. Facebook changed the way we connect with each other through social networking. Apple changed the way think about technology and media. The colleges and universities of the 21st century are educating the leaders for this dynamic new landscape, as their researchers seek solutions to society’s most challenging problems. We might not be able to predict what the next “big thing” will be, but we can explore the forces and trends that may shape it. We might not know who will be the next Hewlett or the next Packard, but we can look at the inspiration for such creativity and innovation.
This session brings together some of the best minds in the Valley, from the worlds of technology and academia. We will ask them what the future holds, and how it might change the way we live, the way we work, and the way we teach and learn.
Leading off the discussion will be Stanford President John Hennessy. Entrepreneur, inventor and educator, Hennessy has a unique perspective on the intersection between innovation, economics and learning.
Panelists: Allen Blue, Vice President, Product Strategy LinkedIn and Tim O'Reilly, Founder and CEO,
O'Reilly Media

The Great Economic Slowdown and a Five-Year Look Ahead
What does the economic slowdown mean for the future? How can the American and global economies right themselves? What’s the economic outlook for the next five years in America and abroad?
Robert Reich answers these three critical questions while weaving in his perspective on global economics, finance and politics. He explains:
-
Why the slowdown is centered on the “demand” side of the economy and why consumers are particularly reluctant to go back to their old buying habits.
-
What the new president and Congress will need to do, along with other governments, to get the global economy back on track.
-
How the slowdown is likely to play out over the next five years.
Reich then summarizes the lessons—economic, financial, regulatory and political—likely to emerge from the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression.
Speaker: Robert Reich, Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley, former Secretary of Labor
