Concurrent Sessions

  • Pink Slips to Greener Pastures
Times have never been better for advancement vice presidents. Never has demand for the profession been greater, compensation so high or institutions so desperate to recruit and retain talent...and never have so many of them been fired. Are expectations–and compensation–so high that institutional leadership is quicker to minimize opportunity costs? And what of those who find themselves unemployed? How do they minimize the damage and get back into the game? During this session, the presenter will explore these issues and try to provide some practical advice for those seeking to rekindle their careers.
Speaker: Dennis Barden, Senior Vice President and Treasurer, Witt/Kieffer

  • Nontraditional Hires: Overcoming the Fundraising Shortage
Fundraising is facing a crisis with the current shortage of talented and effective fundraisers coupled with rapid expansion of advancement departments. In order to create stronger, more effective teams, development leaders must begin making exceptional hires from outside the profession. During this session, you’ll explore what professions nontraditional candidates are most likely to come from as well as how to evaluate the nontraditional candidate. The discussion will highlight Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s use of a nontraditional hiring process in order to fill an important position within their advancement department.
Speakers: Patty Hill-Callahan, Interim Chief Development Officer, Brigham and Women’s Hospital; D. Lance King, Vice President for Advancement, Stony Brook University and President, Stony Brook Foundation; Tina Lang-Stuart, Director of Stewardship, Brigham and Women’s Hospital; Katina Leodas, Principal, Leodas Search Group; and Zachary Smith, Director of Strategic Talent Management, University of California, Irvine

  • The Future of Community and Affinity in an Online World
Many institutions have ventured into online social networking in the hopes of developing and maintaining connections with their younger demographics. But little is known about the exact use of the new online communities by institutions, and the degree of success institutions have with using such communities to achieve advancement goals. During this session, leading experts in the field will offer an overview of the new online communities and will provide successful examples.

Speakers: Louis Alexander, Director, Alumni Education, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); Daniel Guhr, Managing Director, Illuminate Consulting Group; and Andrew Shaindlin, Executive Director, Alumni Association, California Institute of Technology
Moderator: Chris Thompson, Vice President of Research and Information, Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)

We encourage you to follow up this session by registering for the postconference workshop—
Online Communities, Institutional Strategy and Advancement: What the Future Holds” where you can collaborate with experts in the field, peer practitioners and private consultants to develop draft metrics for performance and success with online communities.
The workshop will take place on Tuesday, July 15, 12:30–3:00 PM, following the close of Summit. If you plan on attending, please mark the appropriate box on your Summit registration form.
  • Legislative Advocacy
From endowment spending practices to alumni association affinity programs, federal and state officials have increased their scrutiny of programs led and managed by college and university advancement offices. Hear about the latest legislative and regulatory developments affecting our field and what we can expect for the remainder of 2008. Session participants will also learn how to stay informed and engaged on policy issues affecting advancement.
Speakers: Brian Flahaven, Director of Government Relations and Institutionally Related Foundations, Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and William Johnston, Executive Director, Alumni Association, University of Montana
  • Intergenerational Wealth: Working with the Affluent Family
The transfer of intergenerational wealth among your most affluent families can be a boom—or a bust—for your institution. Learn how a gift officer can develop the highest level of trust with affluent families and their advisers by taking a leadership role in ensuring that the family’s real wealth, epitomized by its values and legacy, is passed on for generations.
Speakers: Stephen Weldon, Planned Giving Director, California State University, Monterey Bay and Rodney C. Zeeb, President and Cofounder, The Heritage Institute
  • Communications Obligations to Parents
Parent communications are increasingly central to all aspects of advancement. Two national leaders in parent communications will offer information about how they manage this area at their own schools, as well as an overview of the changing landscape and insights into best practices nationwide. The presentation will include data from a national survey of parent communications programs at colleges and universities across the U.S.
Speakers: Susan Brown, Associate Director, Parent Programs and Services, Northeastern University and Marjorie Savage, Director of the University Parent Program, University of Minnesota

  • Who is Your Campaign Traffic Controller?
Navigating through a campaign can be an ominous challenge to all involved. The increase of professional fundraisers in education has significantly changed the roles of staff, volunteers and consultants during a campaign. Find out why having an effective “campaign traffic controller” is essential in making sure that all of the pieces and parts of the campaign are moving in a synergistic fashion.
Speakers: Jay Carson, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Robert Morris University and Stephen Higgins, Senior Vice President, Ketchum

  • Bank of America’s Portraits of Donors
In the largest study of philanthropy among the wealthy ever conducted, the differences in giving behaviors of various intuitive groups of donors or archetypes were examined. The findings from the Bank of America Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy showed that 12 archetypes of donors’ giving practices were intuitively and statistically significantly different from the rest of the sample. In other words, philanthropy among the wealthy differs from one another. Find out more about the findings at this session.
Speaker: Patrick Rooney, Director of Research, The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University
