4 Ways to Relieve Stress
While stress can wreak havoc on your mental and physical health, it can be controlled. A recent SmartBrief article outlines the following four ways to relieve stress.
1. Know the difference between stress and anxiety. It is important to recognize stress so you can manage it before it turns into anxiety. Stress and anxiety symptoms can be similar, but there are differences.
Stress flares up when tasks seem overwhelming. Symptoms of stress include:
-
Irritability
-
Disrupted sleep patterns
-
Changes in breath and heart rate
-
Decreased energy levels
-
Headaches
Designed to protect you, these symptoms are normal reactions to a challenge.
Anxiety is more intense, happens when stress is not managed and can linger after the perceived threat or challenge has passed. Symptoms of anxiety include:
-
Feeling nervous and tense
-
Repetition of thoughts based on the future or the past
-
Impatience
-
Inability to concentrate
-
Excessive worry or the need to control
2. Become “present-moment” aware. When feeling stressed, we refuse to stay in the present. We dwell on the past and worry about the future. This type of thinking is self-defeating. Being present in the moment is key to control stress. It is essential for mindfulness. Present-moment awareness means paying attention to the present. Slow down. Notice what is in front of you.
3. Separate your life into buckets. Place things in your life into buckets—those you can control and those you cannot. Focus your energy on the bucket of items you can control.
4. Take up a hobby. Hobbies provide a break with a purpose not tied to work. A hobby takes our mind off work. When we engage in a hobby, we are present and in control. Do something relaxing that also challenges your mind.
