5 Steps to Advance Your Career
If you are feeling stuck at work, answer these five questions to help you set yourself up for success with a plan to move ahead.
The first thing to is to identify where you’re feeling stuck. Then ask yourself some questions,” writes Cindy Perman on CNBC’s Make It website.
Perman recommends asking yourself five questions developed by Gorick Ng, a Harvard career advisor and author of “The Unspoken Rules.” These questions are:
- Am I aware? Do you know what gets rewarded at work? Do you understand what your career journey should look like?
- Am I visible? It’s important that your colleagues and supervisors know what you do. Introduce yourself, speak up at meetings, and share your accomplishments
- Am I intentional? Do you have specific career goals and is what you are doing now helping you achieve those goals?
- Am I mentored? Find a trusted colleague who may be ahead of you career-wise to provide advice and feedback.
- Am I sponsored? Sponsorship is not mentoring. When you are sponsored, there are people willing to advocate for you, helping you advance in your career.
Finally, Perman writes, don’t forget that there is more to life than work: “While hard work is definitely important to achieving success, exertion is not what sets successful people apart from the rest of us, Sarah Sarkis, a psychologist and the senior director of performance psychology at Exos, told CNBC Make It. It’s recovery.”
