5 Ways to Show Appreciation for Volunteers
While we can’t bring together our volunteers to express our appreciation in person, there are other ways to recognize their contributions.
At many organizations and institutions, including CASE, volunteers are integral to operations and volunteer appreciation is an important part of managing a successful volunteer program. Yet many of us face additional challenges this year: we are operating on tighter budgets, some volunteer operations have been paused or modified, and large gatherings have been postponed. Though we cannot host volunteer appreciation events, there are other ways to show appreciation that won’t break the bank. Here are some ideas from Addison Waters in an article for Nonprofit Information:
-
Plan an online event: We know that online events can be meaningful. If you generally host an annual volunteer appreciation party, move your event online. Invite guest speakers to share their experiences and give thanks. Present awards to outstanding volunteers for their efforts.
-
Record a special video thank you. Invite staff to share a message of appreciation.
-
Highlight volunteer impact. If you measure volunteer hours and accomplishments, make sure to acknowledge it! Share your results via an email newsletter, post on your website, and share on social media. You can even bring special attention to volunteers who have made a significant contribution.
-
Take advantage of snail mail. A handwritten card provides a nice personal touch.
-
Pack a care package. While we can’t give gifts in person, we can create care packages filled with coffee, tea, and perhaps your organization’s swag. A small goodie box is a great way to show your thanks.
