Be a More Likable Colleague
Forming connections with colleagues can make work easier and more fun. Follow this advice to help you become a more likable coworker.
- Talk more. While it’s important to be a good listener, it’s also important to talk. One study found that people who spoke more than half the time in a conversation were perceived as more interesting and likable. However, if you are the talker for up to 70 percent of the time, you could be perceived as dominating the conversation and less likable.
- Give compliments. Offering a polite remark to a colleague to show that you appreciate their work can strengthen your professional bond.
- Express preferences. Making decisions can be tough, especially when the decision rests with you and a colleague. Many people feel that if they let the other person make the decision, they will be more likable. However, research found that the non-chooser can make the decision tougher for the chooser, which makes the non-chooser less likable. If you don’t have a strong preference or don’t feel comfortable making the ultimate decision, one approach is to help the decider by removing options.
