Beat Stress at its Own Game
Coping with stress isn’t easy. Follow this advice and you’ll view stressful situations in a whole new light.
- Be aware of the “fight or flight” response. This is an evolutionary response to a perceived threat. In ancient times, this threat might have been a saber-toothed tiger—but today it could be a deadline or a difficult colleague. Our bodies, which can have trouble differentiating between these experiences, will respond to workplace stress by going on high alert: releasing hormones, constricting blood vessels, and increasing inflammation. Try to view the stress as a challenge instead, which in turn could make you take a more positive approach to handling the situation.
- Stop negative thinking. When faced with a stressor, we tend to create stories in our heads to address the unknown, which can lead to self-criticism and catastrophic thinking. Instead, try asking yourself, what is true and what are the assumptions? When you start looking at the problem as a challenge instead of a threat, you will be able to think clearly and problem-solve.
- Analyze. When you confront a workplace stressor, consider what strengths and resources you have. Think about how you have handled similar stressful events.
