Bounce Back Like a Pro
Highly successful people confront failures and setbacks head-on—they recover quickly and don’t spend time beating themselves up. Rehashing your failures and setbacks and pondering alternate scenarios is a waste of time. What does work, according to Krista Mashore, a successful entrepreneur and business coach, is to get over it quickly and move on. She writes: “Not recovering quickly from setbacks can sabotage your success and undermine your self-confidence. It wastes precious time and can lead you to make bad decisions.”
Mashore offers three pieces of advice for recovering quickly from setbacks:
- Use the setback as a learning opportunity. Don’t just shake off issues and move on—use them to learn a lesson that can be applied in the future.
- Move on quickly. You can sit with your disappointment for a while, just not very long. Mashore writes: “When you experience a setback or make a mistake, give yourself a nano-second to whine about it. Then bounce back with these powerful questions: ‘How will this make me stronger and better? And what is my best response right now?’”
- Train your brain. Training yourself to develop and maintain a positive mindset will make you feel more confident and optimistic when dealing with setbacks.
