CASE Board Meets in Washington, D.C.
The CASE Board of Trustees held its first meeting of the fiscal year on Nov. 11 and 12, 2022, at the CASE office in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, the Board received reports on, and robustly discussed, several key topics impacting the association. CASE Board Chair Sergio Gonzalez from Brown University led the meeting.
Over multiple plenary sessions, trustees debated a dues restructuring proposal that aims to simplify the dues structure in U.S. and Canada and address consistency and price sensitivity; reflected on the past, present, and future of educational marketing and communications and the implications for CASE; heard an update on the first phase of CASE’s global market research project that will inform the association’s work moving forward; and considered the implications of the 2022 U.S. midterm elections on CASE and education, delivered by Terry Hartle, Senior Vice President for Government Relations and Public Affairs at the American Council on Education. CASE President and CEO Sue Cunningham also offered her reflections on the current trends and challenges facing the profession based on recent conversations with members across the globe.
Through its formal actions, the Board provided clearer reporting on investment performance by rewording several documents guiding the work of the Finance and Investment Committee; reduced the financial impact of holding in-person Board meetings by requiring trustees or their institutions to cover the expenses of at-least one meeting; ensured that CASE was meeting its global regulatory obligations by approving the FY22 audited consolidated financial statements, the independent examination for the CASE Europe Trust, and the audited financial statements for CASE Asia-Pacific; and attempted to ensure that CASE could continue to provide high-quality service to members, with the corresponding budget to support those services, by approving a dues increase for the next fiscal year, which will be communicated to members during the upcoming membership renewal cycle.
This was the first meeting for five new at-large trustees who began their terms in July including:
- Barbara Altmann from Franklin & Marshall College,
- Montique Cotton Kelly from University of Connecticut Foundation,
- Andrew Hamilton from New York University,
- Elizabeth Littlefield from Reynolds Community College, and
- Scott Mory from Carnegie Mellon University.
This was also the first meeting for three of the four Board officers, including Fritz Schroeder from Johns Hopkins University who is the new Chair-elect, Rachel Sandison from the University of Glasgow who is the new Treasurer, and Matthew Lambert from William & Mary who is the new Secretary.
The next meeting of the CASE Board will take place on March 11-12, 2023, at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland, which will be held in conjunction with the Europe Regional Council meeting.
