WASHINGTON, D.C. — The membership of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education has elected 10 individuals to fill open positions on the CASE Board of Trustees. The 30-member board sets CASE policies, approves the annual budget and ensures sound management of the organization.

The results were announced during the annual membership meeting at the 2018 CASE Summit for Leaders in Advancement, which took place July 15-17 in New York City.

The newly elected trustees are:

Teresa M. Flannery, treasurer. Flannery is vice president of communication at American University in Washington, D.C. Prior to her appointment at AU, Flannery served as assistant vice president, marketing and communications at the University of Maryland. She also held positions in admissions and student affairs at Maryland and was affiliate assistant professor in the College of Education. Flannery has served on the CASE Board of Trustees since 2014 and is the former chair of the CASE Commission on Communications and Marketing.

Sergio Gonzalez, secretary. Gonzalez is senior vice president for university advancement at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to his appointment at Brown, Gonzalez was the senior vice president for university advancement and external affairs at the University of Miami. He has also served as chief of staff for the Miami-Dade County executive mayor and served as the executive director of the South Florida 1999 Super Bowl Host Committee. Gonzalez has served on the CASE Board of Trustees since 2011 and is a former member of the CASE Commission on Philanthropy.

Jo Agnew, at-large trustee. Agnew is chief advancement officer at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Western Australia, where she has served since 2011. Prior to her term at UWA, Agnew was the director of the Oxford University North American Office as well as the development director at King's College London. In 2008, she received the CASE Crystal Apple Award for Teaching Excellence. She currently serves as chair of the CASE Asia-Pacific Board of Directors.

Tonjanita Johnson, at-large trustee. Johnson is the executive vice president and chief operating officer at the University of Tennessee System in Knoxville, Tennessee, a role that she has held since 2016. Prior to her current position, Johnson served as the vice president for communications and marketing at the UT System and as chief deputy to the president at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She has also held marketing and communications positions at Middle Tennessee State University and at Mississippi Valley State University. Johnson is a former member of the CASE Commission on Communications and Marketing

Margene Mastin-Schepps, District VII trustee. Mastin-Schepps is the executive director, marketing and creative services at the University of California, Riverside a role that she has held since 2010. Prior to her current role, Mastin-Schepps was the director of marketing and the director of campaign operations and development communications at UC Riverside. She has also held development positions at the University of California, Los Angeles Anderson School of Management, the University of Redlands and the University of the Pacific. Mastin-Schepps is a member of the CASE District VII Board of Directors and a former member of the CASE Commission on Communications and Marketing.

David Palmer, at-large trustee. Palmer is the vice-president, advancement at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, a role that he has held since 2007. Prior to his tenure at UT, Palmer served as president and executive director of the Royal Ontario Museum Board of Governors (originally the ROM Foundation). He is also a senior fellow at Massey College and an executive committee member of the National Council of Foundation Executives. Palmer is the recipient of the Outstanding Fundraising Professional Award presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Outstanding Achievement Award presented by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education.

Vita Pickrum, District II. Pickrum is the vice president of institutional advancement at Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware, a role that she has held since 2008. She also serves as the president of the Delaware State University Foundation. Pickrum currently serves on the CASE Commission on Philanthropy and the National Steering Committee for Institutionally Related Foundations. Earlier this year, she was presented with the Professional of the Year Award by CASE District II.

Christine Pina, at-large trustee and chair of the Commission on Philanthropy. Pina is the chief advancement officer at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut, a role that has held since 2016. Prior to her current appointment, Pina was the vice president for university advancement at the University of Hartford. She has also held fundraising positions at Wesleyan University, St. Paul's School and The Madeira School. Pina currently serves as District I Trustee on the CASE Board of Trustees and is a member of the CASE Commission on Philanthropy.

Paul Rucker, District VIII trustee. Rucker is vice president for alumni and stakeholder engagement at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, where he has served since 2004. Prior to his current position, Rucker served UW as the executive director of the UW Alumni Association and the associate vice president for alumni and constituent relations. Earlier in his career Rucker served in the community college sector, including at Shoreline Community College where he was the executive director, international programs and at Edmonds Community College where he was the manager, international management internship program. He is a former member of the CASE Commission on Alumni Relations.

Christine Tempesta, District I trustee. Tempesta is the senior director, information systems and volunteer services, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alumni Association, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she has served since 2003. During her tenure at MIT Tempesta has also served at the senior director, strategic initiatives and the director of alumni relations. Prior to her tenure at MIT, she held several positions with the American Heart Association. Tempesta is a former chair of the CASE District I Board of Directors.
