CASE Statement on the invasion of Ukraine
CASE, a global education association with members in 80 countries, condemns the Russian Federation’s invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine in the strongest possible terms.
Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the conflict across Ukraine, as well as those suffering hardship in Russia because of the global response to the action of its leaders. We encourage the efforts of our institutional members to support students and professionals from the affected nations in ways that are consistent with their own missions and values, and to operate with respect, refraining from stigmatizing or excluding individuals based on their country of origin. Leading and responding with empathy will allow us to remain united as a global community of educators, promoting dialogue and learning from one another.
Educational institutions propel civilization forward, encourage freedom of expression, and model democratic thinking. Our vision to advance education to transform lives and society is based on the premise that educational institutions are vital civic – and civil – institutions, core to civil societies. It is the work of our member institutions to develop knowledge and understanding, and to prepare future generations to improve the human condition. In addition to the terrible loss of life, the tragedy of this invasion in Ukraine undermines the very premise of civil society.
CASE will closely monitor the far-reaching impact of the conflict to determine how to best support our members across Europe and beyond.
