CASE Welcomes 10 New Members to Its Board of Trustees
The membership of the Council of Advancement and Support of Education has elected 10 individuals to fill open trustee positions on the CASE Board of Trustees. Additionally, four current members have moved into new officer roles. The 31-member board sets CASE policy, approves the annual budget, and ensures sound management of the organization.
The results were announced during the annual membership meeting at the 2019 CASE Summit for Leaders in Advancement, which took place July 14-16 in Boston, Mass.
The newly elected officers are:
JAMES MOORE
Chair, 2-year term
Jim Moore is the president and chief executive officer of the University of Illinois Foundation in Urbana, Illinois. He previously served as president and CEO of the University of Arizona Foundation and was the president and CEO of the University of Northern Colorado Foundation. He also has held senior-level positions at Iowa State University, the University of Arizona, and Northwest Missouri State University. Moore has served as a member of the CASE Commission on Philanthropy, the National Committee for Institutionally Related Foundations, and the District VII Board of Directors. He currently is a member of the Global Governance Steering Committee. Moore has served on the CASE Board of Trustees since 2010.
TERESA FLANNERY
Chair-elect, 2-year term
Terry Flannery is the former vice president of communications at American University in Washington, D.C., a role that she held since 2008. Prior to her appointment at American, Flannery served as assistant vice president, marketing and communications at the University of Maryland. She also held positions in admissions and student affairs at Maryland and was affiliate assistant professor in the College of Education. Flannery has served as chair of the CASE Commission on Communications and Marketing and as a member of the Strategic Plan Steering Committee. She is a member of the Global Governance Steering Committee and is a frequent CASE presenter. Flannery has served on the CASE Board since 2014.
SERGIO GONZALEZ
Treasurer, 1-year term
Sergio Gonzalez is the senior vice president for university advancement at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to his appointment at Brown, Gonzalez was the senior vice president for university advancement and external affairs at the University of Miami. He has also served as chief of staff for the Miami-Dade County executive mayor and served as the executive director of the South Florida 1999 Super Bowl Host Committee. Gonzalez is a former member of the CASE Commission on Philanthropy and the Strategic Plan Steering Committee. He currently serves as a member of the Global Governance Steering Committee. Gonzalez has served on the CASE Board of Trustees since 2011.
FRITZ SCHROEDER
Secretary, 1-year term
Fritz Schroeder is the vice president for development and alumni relations at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Schroeder has served in numerous capacities at Johns Hopkins including Senior Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Executive Director of the Alumni Association and Director of Annual Giving. Previously he served at the University of Maryland at College Park in numerous advancement roles. He is the author of the CASE book Annual Giving: A Practical Approach and is currently chairing CASE’s Curriculum Task Force. Schroeder is a frequent CASE speaker and in 2002 he received the CASE Crystal Apple Award for Teaching Excellence. He has served as an at-large member on the CASE Board of Trustees since 2016.

THOMAS BONNER
At-Large Trustee, 3-year term
Tommy Bonner serves as vice president for external relations at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Prior to joining Carleton, he was vice president for advancement at Macalester College, also in Minnesota. Bonner held numerous advancement positions at Sewanee: The University of the South including vice president for university relations and executive director of development. Early in his career Bonner held several advancement positions at the University of Southern Mississippi including director of planned giving. He currently serves as a member of CASE’s Liberal Arts Advisory Group.
JOHN DOWD
District III Trustee, 3-year term
Jay Dowd serves as chief executive officer of The Citadel Foundation and vice president for institutional advancement at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, roles he has held since 2013. Previously he was the vice president for development and executive director at the Francis Marion University Foundation. He has also served in advancement leadership capacities at Columbia College and Methodist University. Dowd served as co-chair of the 2009 District III Conference Committee and has been a long-time member of the CASE District III Board of Directors.
BRIAN HASTINGS
District VI Trustee, 3-year term
Brian Hastings in the president and chief executive officer at the University of Nebraska Foundation in Lincoln, Nebraska. Prior to Nebraska, he served in a number of leadership positions at The Ohio State University, including as senior associate vice president and campaign executive director, and assistant vice president for principal gifts. Hastings currently co-chairs the CASE Reporting Standards and Management Guidelines Task Force and is a member of the National Committee for Institutionally Related Foundations. Previously, he served on the CASE Commission on Philanthropy, and a founding faculty member for the CASE Management Institute.
JENNIFER HEISEY
District V Trustee, 3-year term
Jennifer Heisey is the executive director of the University of Cincinnati Alumni Association and vice president for alumni relations at the University of Cincinnati Foundation in Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to UC, Heisey served as associate vice president for alumni relations and annual giving as well as executive director of the alumni association at the University of Louisville. She has also held alumni relations positions at Buffalo State College and Ohio University Alumni Association. She is an active member of the Council of Alumni Association Executives and is a former member of the CASE ASAP Executive Board. Heisey has held numerous volunteer roles within CASE District V.
LORI HOULIHAN
At-Large Trustee, 3-year term
Lori Houlihan is vice-provost (advancement) at University College London, in London, United Kingdom. Before joining UCL, she spent 12 years at the University of Aberdeen in several advancement related positions and established the university’s first Directorate of Marketing. Houlihan formerly served as vice chair of the CASE Europe Board of Trustees and was a member of the CASE Summit Planning Committee. Currently she is co-chair of CASE’s AMAtlas Advisory Committee and is a member of the Global Governance Steering Committee. Houlihan has served as an at-large member on the CASE Board of Trustees since 2016.
MATTHEW LAMBERT
At-Large Trustee, 3-year term
Matthew Lambert is the vice president for university advancement at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Prior to joining William and Mary, Lambert held numerous positions at Georgetown University including serving as associate vice president for university development and executive director of development and engagement. He also held positions at The Ohio State University. Lambert is the author of the book Privatization and the Public Good: Public Universities in the Balance and co-editor of the book Advancing Higher Education: New Strategies for Fundraising, Philanthropy, and Engagement.
DONNA MACPHEE
At-Large Trustee, 3-year term
Donna MacPhee is the vice president of alumni relations at Columbia University in New York. Prior to her role as president of the Columbia Alumni Association, MacPhee was the co-founder and managing director of Event Management Associates, a company that provided event and meeting planning services to a broad range of not-for-profit and corporate clients. She also managed finances for various departments of the National Hockey League. MacPhee is a member of the Board of Directors of the Council of Alumni Association Executives and served as a planning committee member for the 2017 CASE Summit for Leaders in Advancement.
PETER MATHIESON
At-large Trustee, 3-year term
Peter Mathieson is the principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Prior to his role at Edinburgh, he was the president and vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong. A nephrologist by profession, Mathieson held several senior academic positions at the University of Bristol including dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He holds fellowships with the Academy of Medical Sciences, Hughes Hall Cambridge, and Hong Kong College of Physicians. Mathieson is the former chair of the CASE Asia-Pacific Board of Directors and has been at at-large member on the CASE Board of Trustees since 2016.
TED MITCHELL
At-Large Trustee, 3-year term
Ted Mitchell is the president of the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C., the major coordinating body for colleges and universities in the United States. Prior to joining ACE, Mitchell served as under secretary of education at the U.S. Department of Education. He is the former president of Occidental College and the NewSchools Venture Fund. Mitchell has also served as dean of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, president of the California State Board of Education, and vice president for education and strategic initiatives at the J. Paul Getty Trust.
RACHEL SANDISON
At-Large Trustee, 3-year term
Rachel Sandison is the vice-principal, external relations at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Sandison has held numerous senior leadership positions at the university including executive director, external relations and director marketing, recruitment, and international. Prior to arriving at Glasgow, she was the director of marketing, student recruitment, and alumni relations at the University of Aberdeen. She is a chartered marketer and serves as a member of the Universities Marketing Forum and the Universities Scotland International Committee. Sandison is a current member of the CASE Commission on Communications and Marketing.
