Deciphering Office Jargon
Every workplace has its lingo, and often, it includes a good amount of corporate jargon. Jargon is both widely used and widely reviled. On one hand, using jargon gives you a short-hand currency with which to participate in office or industry conversations. On the other hand, when you use jargon you are making it hard to communicate with people who don’t understand what you are saying.
Aliya Kamalova provides an overview of office jargon—why we use it and why we hate it—in Career Contessa. She defines office jargon this way: “… the use of metaphors, idioms, euphemisms, business buzzwords, and other unique verbiage in order to get across some sort of information in a corporate setting. Employees use corporate jargon in order to get points across more quickly or sometimes just to sound vaguely professional.”
According to a Career Contessa survey, here are five of the most despised office jargon phrases:
- Per my email…
- Help me understand
- Let’s unpack
- Let’s parking lot this
- Happy [Day of the Week]
