Don’t Let New Routines Sidetrack Good Habits
Good habits can be hard to maintain, especially when your routine changes. Here are ideas to help you stay committed to goods habits despite a new schedule.
- Use “if-then” statements. For instance, if you are starting a hybrid schedule, tell yourself, “If I go into the office, then I’ll go to the gym on my way home.”
- Create a “clocking off” ritual to signal the end of the workday. For example: writing a to-do list for the next day or washing out your coffee cup.
- Take breaks between tasks.
- Include time for meals (including food prep).
- If you’re a morning person, exercise first thing in the morning, so other commitments don’t get in the way.
- Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning is a good way to develop healthy sleeping patterns. You are probably used to setting an alarm for the morning, but what about setting one every night? It can remind you that it is time to start getting ready for bed.
- Think about a successful habit that you had in the past. For instance, if you went to a yoga class after work with a colleague on Wednesdays, what got you there each week? Was it the convenience of going after work? Was it your love of yoga? Was it knowing that your colleague was counting on you? When you discover your motivation, it can help you establish future habits.
