How to Be a Better Boss for Remote Staff
Even if you’re a seasoned manager, there's always room for improvement. Here are some tips on how to be a better boss to remote and hybrid employees.
- Establish processes. Ask yourself the following questions: Which tools will help my team? How will we connect, communicate, and collaborate? How are decisions made? How can we work independently and together?
- Focus on results. Trust that your employees are working even though you can’t see them. Shift your focus to output and outcomes. You can ensure fair treatment of both remote and onsite workers by creating and tracking project checklists that clearly communicate your expectations.
- Assign mentors. Nothing will make a new remote worker feel more comfortable than having a work buddy. Match new hires with more senior members of your team.
- Create time (and a budget) for face-to-face retreats. Think about organizing a retreat that brings in your remote workers for several days, so all employees get a chance to know each other and build more cohesive teams.
- Take time to connect. Don’t jump right into work talk on conference calls. Just as you would with an in-person meeting, start off with some small talk, ask how people are doing, or share company news. You will also be seen as a caring boss if you check in with your remote workers occasionally and ask them what matters to them and how you can help them.
