50 Years of Firsts
1974
- Alice Beeman starts as CASE’s first president on Dec. 1. Edwin Crawford is the first board chair.
- The organization hosts its first conference, the International Alumni Conference, Oct. 1-3, in Washington, D.C.
1975
- CASE holds its first Annual Assembly, July 8-10, in Chicago. That year, CASE also creates the Summer Institutes in the U.S.
- Currents magazine debuts in September.
1976 CASE publishes its first book, The Changing World of College Relations: History and Philosophy 1917-1975 by W. Emerson Reck.
1982 The July/August issue of Currents includes the first detailed study of advancement professionals, “We the People.”
1983 The first Crystal Apple Award for Teaching Excellence is given to M. Fredric Volkmann.
1990 On Sept. 23-26, CASE holds its first conference in Europe at the University of Edinburgh.
1994
- CASE creates the Circle of Excellence Awards from several longstanding recognition programs.
- CASE opens its London office. The Singapore office will open in 2007 and Mexico City office in 2011.
- CASE launches its website.
2003 CASE launches the Online Speaker Series, its first professional development program delivered via the internet.
2006
- On March 1-3, CASE holds its first conference in the Asia-Pacific region in Singapore.
- CASE revamps its Annual Assembly to become the Summit for Leaders in Advancement, held July 9-11, in New York City. Speakers included CBS anchor Bob Schieffer and philanthropist William H. Gates.
- CASE's Industry Advisory Council, comprised of executives from companies whose business interests align with CASE's mission, meets for the first time.
2007 CASE hosts its first Congreso in Latin America.
2009 In Europe, CASE launches the Graduate Trainee Programme. CASE would expand the talent development initiative across other regions and in 2017 launch the CASE Advancement Internship.
2016 The CASE Commission on Alumni Relations creates the Alumni Engagement Metrics Task Force to develop a new, multimodal method to measure alumni engagement.
2019 CASE unveils the CASE Competencies, which outline the key knowledge, skills, and abilities advancement professionals need to succeed.
2020 In July, CASE launches a new governance structure with one global board and councils in each region.
2021
- CASE creates two key virtual programs: the CASE Academy and the first online All Districts Conference in February, with nearly 20,000 individuals registered.
- CASE publishes the CASE Global Reporting Standards, the first fully global set of guidelines for reporting the results of educational philanthropy at schools, colleges, and universities.
2023 In March, CASE’s Opportunity and Inclusion Center establishes the Advancement Inclusion Index, a first-of-its-kind tool to measure advancement teams’ progress on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
