Ways To Beat the Work Doldrums
Whether it seems like everybody else is on vacation or your job’s rhythm is stuck on repeat, we all face the work doldrums at some point. Not to worry—there are time-tested practices that will help you stay focused and productive:
- Set goals. Outline your goals and create a timeline and action plan to accomplish them. This gives you something tangible to work toward while providing dates and to-do lists to keep you on track.
- Block distractions. We are all bombarded with emails, calls, news alerts, and text messages, which all distract us from work. To stay focused, set up digital blocks such as “do not disturb” time on your email and phone.
- Organize. Set aside time on a weekly or biweekly basis to clean, declutter, and organize your workspace. A clean and organized area helps to lower stress while helping to minimize distractions.
- Do interval work. It pays to break up tasks into manageable chunks of time. Set your timer for 30 minutes (or whatever time period is best for you) and work to that point. Repeat throughout the day. You will feel a sense of accomplishment after you complete each segment.
- Reward yourself. Find ways to reward yourself for each task or assignment you complete. Perhaps you could step outside for few minutes for fresh air or take a lunch break at a nice restaurant once you finished a project.
