"Walkman, Pac Man, Rubik's Cubes, and DeLoreans--just a few of the '80s great memories! That leads us to this year's gala theme, "Back to the 80s."
We first had to have a logo that said it all--a short but highly recognizable image that would immediately set the tone. Once the logo was set, the rest fell into place easily by introducing other elements equally as memorable. The colors had to be bright and bold, and the artistic elements needed to resemble Memphis Art. Memphis Art is a mishmash of styles that are often identified with geometric shapes and bright, saturated colors. Our gala chairs wanted a design that quickly captured the guests' interest upon opening the invitation.
After a few mockups that laid out initial expectations, combined with a few trial-and-error style pieces, we created a fun pop-up invitation. Invited guests were surprised to open the invitation and see a pop-up Rubik's Cube. In addition, there are two slender inserts with the sponsors, underwriters, and contact information that were adhered with a bright yellow label to the right side. The inserts also have fun '80s memorabilia on them that mimics the rest of the main piece."
From the Judges
They picked a fun concept and totally ran with it. The materials oozed fun and embodied the theme. One judge noted, "this made me want to attend."
