UofTMed
From the Judges' Report
The goal of U of T Medicine, according to the publication's CASE entry, is to "redefine the alumni magazine for readers." In our opinion, it does that.
The magazine was a clear stand out for our judges-at first glance, with its visually striking design but also after a closer look with its creative story selection and storytelling. More than any other magazine in the category, U of T Medicine took risks in both its layout and content.
The magazine made excellent use of illustrations, photography and spot color, including a neon orange that should have been headache inducing but wasn't. Unlike some other magazines, the U of T Medicine benefited from both editorial and design restraint with the result that no page felt overcrowded or text heavy. The magazine's thick, high-quality paper made it "even more satisfying to hold and page through," as one judge commented. Covers of both issues we reviewed were clean and compelling.
While often simpler and shorter than their counterparts in other publications, U of T Medicine's articles were well written and thought provoking. Our judges particularly liked cover stories on medical mysteries and on what needs to change in medicine. We were also impressed that the publication incorporated numerous faculty voices.
