"This is Water"
About the entry
This brochure is designed to introduce prospective high school seniors to the rich variety of people they will meet at Kenyon College.
From the Judges' Report
This yield piece took the form of a very unique gift, a book created from the Commencement speech delivered at Kenyon by David Foster Wallace in 2005 that went viral. The judges appreciated this package - a specially designed box with an inset for the book and a place for a small publication that spoke directly to admitted students connecting this extraordinary message with Kenyon. The meaning that comes across is: that Kenyon is the kind of questioning, interdisciplinary environment where amazing ideas are created and shared. It was a bold concept, coming more than a decade after the speech was delivered and several years after the untimely death of the speaker, who is neither an alum nor a member of Kenyon's faculty. The judges looked past all this because they loved the bold statement that sending "This is Water" makes to the kinds of students who are admitted to Kenyon.
