Changing What's Possible: Harper's Story
About the entry
"Harper's Story" is a microsite within the Medical University of South Carolina's giving website, a serial narrative featuring video and text components. This project chronicles the story of a couple who came to the Medical University of South Carolina in one of their most challenging moments—after their unborn daughter was diagnosed with the most severe form of spina bifida. They put their faith in the MUSC team to deliver their little girl, repair Harper's spine and then provide guidance for whatever the future held.
From the Judges' Report
This entry was not just about an incredibly compelling story – every institution has compelling stories. What sets this entry above the rest was the way the Medical University of South Carolina told the story, which connected completely with the institution’s mission. The institution took an enormous risk by telling this story realtime – nobody knew how the story would end – and clearly built up a level of trust with the parents. The result provided supporters and the public a clear picture of the life-saving medical work being done at the institution.
This entry also demonstrated that Medical University of South Carolina listened to its donors and supporters who had asked that the institution invest less in appreciate galas and events and more in sharing the institution’s impact. The presentation of the story on the web through a microsite was also very well done and made accessible and understandable to individuals without a medical background. Judges particularly liked the inclusion of a glossary of medical terms with each chapter of the story.
