About the entry
For an in-depth feature on CRISPR technology and how it might transform conservation, Santa Clara University turned to leading science writer Emma Marris. "Cut & Paste Conservation" opens by posing this question: "We can now replace a gene in any organism for a hundred bucks a pop. We can alter wild species to save them. So should we?"
From the Judges' Report
Santa Clara consistently sets the bar high and did not disappoint this year. The judges were immediately drawn to illustrator Jason Holley’s utopian/dystopian paint splattered rhino which serves as a commendable introduction to a story about altered species and conservation. We felt this was a forward thinking and progressive approach that makes the audience question existence.
