Nebraska's First College Shaping the Future Since 1867
About the entry
Peru State College celebrated its 150th year in 2017. To commemorate 150 years of higher education, a book was developed to detail the school's history—a rich tapestry of innovation, endurance, community service and pursuit of educational excellence. The book includes firsthand accounts of faculty, staff, alumni and friends, as well as archival images and historical information.
From the Judges' Report
The cover signals are strong and cheerful. The front cover features a beautiful contemporary image of a campus and students, while the back features a historical photo. Together, the images convey the maturing of Nebraska’s first college. Inside the cover, the content is fun and interesting and, thanks to the varied page layout and content, easy to engage with – whether one wants to read a bit or a lot of the book. The committee’s one reservation was that, despite being a rural Nebraska town, it seemed the book could have included a broader range of voices and images. In fact, the entry from The University of Queensland St. Lucia, Carving a History: A Guide to the Great Court, was much stronger when solely considering the diversity element in the judges’ criteria. However, this book stood out as being especially well-researched and carefully curated while also directly aligning with the mission of CASE. The editor has done a wonderful job of telling the college’s 150 year story with interesting short bios, excellent historical context, and a wide range of historical photos.
