Smith Alumnae Quarterly
About the entry
The stories in Smith College's magazine feature well reflect a broad range of reader interests: a personality profile of an older and very influential alumna, a young alumna who has become an international restaurateur and a topic story on the important improvements that women bring to their workplaces that will benefit women who will follow them. Strong photos pull the reader through.
From the Judges' Report
Smith Magazine is empowering in both in design and content. It’s very mission-driven and the content celebrates the school’s past, present, and looks to the future. The magazine does a wonderful job of serving its audience while also presenting content relevant to the general public. The story choices were compelling and interesting and gave readers a good sense of the community and culture at Smith. You sense a constant feeling of pride and the “Smith impact” throughout the magazine. Several of the pieces offered takeaways for the readers like “Lesson Plan” about Sherrerd winners sharing teaching and learning lessons, or the department “Smith Women Create,” which was fun and full of interesting content ranging from books to recipes from restauranteurs.
The design, although varied between the spring 2017 and winter 2017-18 issue, was on-brand, clean and confident. The judicious use of white space and the nice balance of shorter and longer stories made the whole magazine feel open and accessible and gave readers an opportunity to scan and pause.
The special campaign issue was a unique way to celebrate a campaign and was beautifully designed and written. The campaign issue made you want to attend Smith or at least be excited about the community even though you may not be in it.
After viewing the cover and then picking up the magazine to scan through the pieces, you’re enticed to spend quality time with it.
