UC San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. It includes top-ranked graduate schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division with nationally renowned programs in basic, biomedical, transitional and population sciences; and a preeminent biomedical research enterprise. Since UCSF as a professional med school and grad school does not have a university’s typical alumni base of support and camaraderie, they geared the magazine toward its patients (who often become their donors through simply gratitude). It’s a brilliant idea. As a result, the magazine is fun to read for anyone. You don’t have to know a thing about medicine or UCSF to enjoy it. That’s the key to any good publication—getting people to read it. They did a great job with content, covers and photography without being superfluous.
