Antiracist Seminar Series Promotes Community-Wide Respect for Diversity
From the Nominator
Cambridge Friends School has always strived to promote efforts and learning around diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the annual seminar series on these topics experienced its second year of high audience attendance in 2018. Jack Hill, head of middle school and director of diversity, equity, and inclusion, introduced the first large-scale seminar in November 2017: a book discussion on The Guide for White Women Who Teach Black Boys featuring Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., Debby Irving, author of Waking Up White, and CFS’s own Jack Hill, a contributor and organizer for the book. Just over 300 educators and community members attended this panel discussion on the book’s premise: how to reach, teach, and love Black boys in the classroom.
From the Judges
It is refreshing to see an institution of this size take the lead in diversity, equity, and inclusion training for K-8 teachers. Bringing in experts and researchers to the conversation adds credibility to the event. Engaging parents for the event allows for families and the school community to work together to create a more just community.
