From the Nominator
Twenty-five years ago, with .7 seconds left on the clock in the NCAA basketball championship game, Charlotte Smith hit the winning three-point shot that gave UNC its first and only title. After a career in the WNBA, she took over a mediocre program at Elon University and coached it to immediate success. As UNC watches to see if Smith is the heir to her mentor’s job at her alma mater, she is impressing players, parents, and all of Elon with her character as much as her basketball skills.

This could easily have been a predictable, surface-level profile but instead took unexpected turns and impressed the judges with its perceptive insight into the subject.
