Grounds for Detention
From the Nominator
Asylum seekers, victims of human trafficking, and veterans are among those that attorney and activist Christina Fialho tries to help in her day-to-day work. All are detained immigrants.
From the Judges
“Grounds for Detention” couldn’t be more timely. A torn-from-the-headlines story sheds light on the work that alumna Christina Fialho is doing to help detained immigrants, among them asylum seekers, victims of human trafficking and veterans, that are arguably victims of for-profit prison corporations that have an incentive to see as many immigrants as possible detained. Writer Katia Savchuk effectively humanized a controversial topic. The story was tied strongly to the school’s mission of educating leaders of “competence, conscience, and compassion grounded in faith-inspired values.
