Illustrating Legacy: Woodruff Scholarship 30th Anniversary
From the Nominator
George Woodruff, director of the Coca-Cola Company for 49 years, endowed the Woodruff Scholarship at UGA in 1987 with his passing. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this scholarship and its annual luncheons with Woodruff’s granddaughter, Missie Pierce, UGA hosted a special reception at the university president’s home. Scholarship recipients (past and present) were invited, as well as staff who have worked with Pierce over the years. The highlight of the event was the presentation of UGA’s first cumulative impact book to Pierce.
From the Judges
This event and book successfully showed the impact of 30 years of philanthropy–a remarkable achievement. We were impressed by the many personal aspects in this entry, from the beautiful and heartfelt letters from a variety of past scholarship recipients, to photos in the book of the donor throughout the years, to serving her favorite dessert at the event. The emails from the donor in the submission showed the impact of these thoughtful touches. The design of the book itself is lovely, and the map is a very nice touch to show impact. It was nice that current students were invited to participate in the event, especially since so many of the previous scholarship recipients mentioned fond memories of meeting and spending time with the donor in their letters.
