Oberlin Alumni Magazine
From the Nominator
For several years our magazine has included poetry in each issue and, more recently, we’ve begun including carefully-chosen recipes from expert chefs, bakers, and, well, seaweed harvesters. Like everything in our magazine, they’re not for everyone, and we’re good with that. In fact, we think the magazine is good because of that. We have attempted in our design to present all of this within our best expression of Oberlin's aesthetic, which favors creativity and imagination over budget-busting, off-the-shelf solutions.
From the Judges
Oberlin’s layout was overall quite readable. The type was nicely sized and spaced, in easy-to-read fonts. We particularly enjoyed the opening spread and the use of illustration on pages 14 and 15. Even images that were less engaging were color corrected beautifully and placed advantageously in the layout. We particularly enjoyed the treatment of books on page 22 and the careful treatment of pull-quotes and captions throughout the features. The class notes—a struggle for so many of us—were particularly well handled. We liked the book cover thumbnails alongside announcements of recent releases and the generous distribution of photos and sidebars throughout the section.
