Penn and Slavery
From the Nominator
Illustration for article about an undergraduate research team’s findings on the role of slavery in the University’s development. This illustration depicts a sensitive topic in a bold block-print style as a way of bringing the issue front and center. Penn’s school colors are used to connect the university directly to slavery, with a blue figure examining the origin of an encircling red chain.
From the Judges
This was unanimously loved by all of the judges. Absolutely beautiful. It could have gone all wrong, but it didn't. As editors and designers, we know how difficult it can be to illustrate concepts, especially in a new way, and this illustration does it so well. This simplicity of this illustration, especially given the not-so-simple subject matter, is powerful, and definitely the way to go. We all agreed that because of the illustration, we wanted to read the story. Great use of the Penn colors, too, given the "heavy" subject matter.
