Duke University’s research communications are built on a hub-and-spokes model, with the hub being the Office of University Communications on the campus side, and the spokes being science writers embedded in units like Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering, Nicholas School of the Environment, School of Medicine, and various centers and institutes. All Duke news copy intended for external releases comes to UComm for editing and distribution, with the exception of the Duke Health News & Communications, which relies on UComm for editing, but then does its own pitching and distribution.
