The illustration used for the cover of Quest, our research magazine, transports the viewer to the plight of innocent immigrant children on a dangerous journey to a new life. The subject matter is relevant and timely, but the imagery can sometimes be difficult to present. We opted for an illustration to show a playful moment amidst a harrowing journey, a child’s game with a toy train resembling the beast on which they ride. It’s a moment of innocence before the harsh reality of a new world sets in.
From the Judges
The judges were really drawn to this illustration. It was a bold idea to show "play" in this way, and commendable to take on the issue of immigration to start with, and to illustrate it in an unexpected way. background texture is lovely and the character style is great. There were a few concerns: It's not clear enough, especially with the headline, what the story is about just looking at the illustration. Overall, though, it is very compelling.
