Year: 2019
Award Level: Bronze
Award Winner(s): Brown University
Award: Circle of Excellence
Category: Writing | Column or Opinion Piece
From the Nominator
This is an example of Brown Alumni Magazine's Current Obsession department, which occupies that last page of the magazine and leaves readers with a taste of what's on the mind of a student, faculty member, or graduate. In this issue, readers met philosophy professor Felicia Nimue Ackerman, whose words they have probably read before, if they ever read letters to the editor.
From the Judges
This piece artfully and effectively captured the personality of Felicia Nimue Ackerman, one of the most prolific (and well published) letters-to-the-editor writers alive today. The tone is punchy and fun, but it doesn't make fun of its subject, accomplishing quite a bit in a small number of words.
