Women in STEM: From a Remote Village in India to a PhD in Engineering
From the Nominator
This innovative video is about the incredible journey of Pampa Dey, an alumnus of the University of Waterloo. Dey was born in a remote village in India where most girls don’t attend school beyond elementary school. Pampa persevered through many obstacles and setbacks, eventually finding her way to the University of Waterloo where, against all odds, she graduated with a PhD from the Faculty of Engineering. The Pampa Dey video, which deftly navigates the global issues of girls’ education and women in STEM disciplines, was launched during Waterloo’s spring convocation ceremonies as a way to build pride and engage our alumni audiences.
From the Judges
This video is a great example of powerful storytelling. We loved seeing the main character in her home, understanding her obstacles and celebrating her triumphs. The editors and writers did a great job of condensing her story to the most salient points. Congratulations on a great piece!
