The 26 Campaign
From the Nominator
McKendree University’s longest serving president, Dr. James M. Dennis, announced in 2019 that he would be retiring, and that his 26th and final year as president would be the 2019-20 school year. In an effort to stimulate giving during this historic and transformative time for the institution, while also paying tribute to our iconic president, the 26 Campaign was born. In a brainstorming meeting with our small development team of seven, a campy idea was brought to the table in hopes to bring some excitement to this special year: socks with our beloved president's face on them. This spurred a plethora of creative ideas, from sock-inspired social media campaigns, an alumni-driven giving day, means to celebrate with constituents near and far, to even a staple accessory for everyone to wear at all of the president’s final events at McKendree. The 26 Campaign has increased alumni giving and participation for McKendree University for the first time in four years. McKendree has also received larger or additional donations from our most engaged constituents in honor of the president's final year. This submission focuses on the main projects and events that have rolled out so far, including: three direct mail appeals, one giving day, and two events.
From the Judges
This was a unique opportunity to engage alumni over several decades around a common appeal. They produced attention-grabbing marketing materials, and the socks were a fun and engaging idea. Great job catching the attention of older alumni with honoring the president as well as younger classes with the trendy giveaway. Impressive results: 61% increase in dollars raised year over year.
