Bioluminescence Bloom
From the Nominator
Bioluminescent bacteria from the red tide created a bright blue wave splendor on the beaches of San Diego. Captured by staff photographer Erik Jepsen, this photo of the red tide was used in UC San Diego's annual report to discuss the new Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation. The center will work to develop solutions created from increasing temperatures in our oceans and environment like the boost in red tide.
From the Judges
“Striking” was the most popular word to describe this photo. By dragging the shutter for a long exposure, the photographer created a compelling image that inspired the viewer to read and learn more about red tide. The judges loved this photo on its own but loved it even more seeing how it appeared in the magazine. The use of copy and graphics only enhanced the image. Most of the judges were compelled to go back and revisit the photo several times.
