Borderlands of Southern Colorado
From the Nominator
The editorial design of “Borderlands of Southern Colorado” achieves several objectives in the Winter 2019 issue of STATE, the magazine of the Colorado State University System. The design starts with the magazine cover and leads into a story package encompassing 15 pages; it visually shares with readers key concepts highlighted in a series of museum exhibits and presentations led by university alumni. The design further conveys alumni success and their meaningful contributions to Colorado communities through the museum project and the complex ideas it illuminates.
From the Judges
Some of the judges said this piece took them "on a journey." One praised its "warmth and humanity." The vintage photos and historical map effectively provided visual interest and a sense of time and place. We liked the varied elements—the map, the juxtaposition of old and new photos, and the full-bleed images. The judges appreciated the echo of the cover photo on the final page—with the addition of color and a smile.
