Bowdoin College Swim Team: In Their Element
From the Nominator
This photo features Bowdoin's swimming and diving team in the college's Greason Pool. Heather Perry, who often partners with the college on freelance photography projects, wanted to showcase the divers (in the foreground) in a few different pictures, so she had them perform tricks underwater, with the swimmers standing on the bottom of the pool watching in the background. The photo was showcased as the opening spread in the winter 2019 edition of Bowdoin Magazine. This opener is generally reserved for a dynamic photo that captures the season and the essence of Bowdoin College and "sets the scene" for the rest of the magazine.
From the Judges
There’s a lot of energy in this photo. The more you look at this photo, the more you focus on the details. You can’t help but want to study each subject’s unique pose. There was no doubt a lot of forethought was involved, since it’s challenging to communicate underwater. The light reflected on the surface lends a mysterious quality to the image.
