This is a portrait of Olivia Finckel ‘20, originally taken for a news feature, then later featured in the TU Magazine. Olivia, who is a captain on the Towson University volleyball team, has been called “TU’s most well-rounded athlete,” by her strength and conditioning coach. She is known for her strong work ethic in the weight room, so I wanted to make sure that this portrait portrayed her as strong, fierce and unstoppable.

The photographer took what could have been a straightforward shot of “TU’s most well-rounded athlete” and brought it to the next level, thanks to the creative use of lighting and aerosol spray, and masterfully positioning the subject to project her fierce energy. This photo oozes strength, yet the subject’s femininity is not lost. “I want to have a conversation with her,” said one judge. The photographer wanted to stop readers in their tracks. And they succeeded with this eye-catching and dramatic photo.
