BU Today
From the Nominator
We believe these three stories offer an example of the breadth and depth of journalism BU Today seeks to produce. Our story, “A Dead Humpback, a Team of Scientists, a Race for an Answer,” chronicled the death of a majestic 40-ton humpback whale that beached on Cape Cod, and the frantic 72 hours in the life of a team of determined BU researchers who were given a chance to glimpse inside the world of an intact, minimally damaged whale carcass to determine how it lived and, perhaps more important, how it died. “Behind Bars. And Graduating from BU,” told the story of a very unconventional graduating senior: a 64 year-old man who had spent the last 37 years in jail. He was graduating through BU’s novel prison education program, which has graduated nearly 400 prison inmates since it started in 1972. Our third story, “Have You Held a Human Heart? An Afternoon Inside BU’s Cadaver Lab,” offered a fascinating peak into an advanced anatomy class that exposes students to the mysteries of the human body and provides an unforgettable experience.
