Cuba: A Tropical Symphony
From the Nominator
This series of illustrations accompanied a professor's essay about her travels throughout Cuba, a place she described as "a symphony of voices" that "vibrates with a singular rhythm." The illustrations incorporate visual indicators of rhythm, music, and voices to help bring the symphony alive for readers.
From the Judges
The styling of this submission certainly matches the atmosphere, energy, and vibrancy of Cuba. The palette is inviting. One can almost feel the warmth of the setting sun. Given also the challenges presented by embargoes, particularly related to the import of goods, these scenes might represent any time in the last 60 years, adding to a sense of timelessness. The loose watercolor style of the pieces is emotive and allows for some forgiveness in technical execution. The illustrations align very well with the energy of the written piece, each elevating the other.
