Dartmouth Alumni Magazine
From the Nominator
For this special issue celebrating Dartmouth's 250th Anniversary, we tore up our regular template and architecture to create a whole new magazine design. We wanted a complete departure to indicate just how special the anniversary was—as well as to communicate how special and unique this issue is. Years in the making, the issue contains several other unique features: five posters we commissioned for the anniversary, uniquely colorized photos from the archives, a graphic retelling of one famous alum's exploits around the world, and a foldout matrix of ephemera and historical oddities from the College's history.
From the Judges
This publication split the panel, with most extremely impressed by the quantity of content and huge efforts to source historical content and mix with brand new celebratory content—complete with a letter archive and beautiful pull-out posters. The panel liked the pleasingly antique design with old fonts and engravings, reflecting the magnificent 250-year anniversary. Old engravings were very effective, plus sharp contemporary caricatures of ancient influential alumni, a lively graphic novel style story, colorized old sports photos and contemporary portraits of key female alumni. Typography well designed and consistent. The magazine achieved impact for a celebration issue with, quite rightly, a huge number of pages devoted to class notes.
