Fairfield University SAA: Teddy Bears with Love
From the Nominator
In December of 1999, the Office of Alumni Relations at Fairfield University kicked-off what would come to be known as the annual "Teddy Bears with Love" Drive. Alumni across the country were asked to donate new, unused teddy bears to be donated to local children's hospitals at the holidays. That year, 500 bears were collected and donated in Connecticut. Now, 21 years later, the Student Alumni Association, in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Relations and Fairfield's regional alumni chapters, continues to proudly spearhead this effort.
From the Judges
This submission highlights a community service initiative which has grown to connect students with alumni over a shared project, while also engaging campus partners in a shared mission. This program has a large regional impact and positions Fairfield University as a good community partner. It stands out because of its low cost, yet high impact model. The program capitalizes on holiday spirit (understanding the target audience) and teaches students, alumni, and campus partners of the impact of giving back to the greater community. The program has been a huge success over the past 20 years and will continue to be a staple in the Fairfield Community.
