Notre Dame Magazine
From the Nominator
Notre Dame Magazine has six goals: 1) to cover the university, 2) tell stories of its alumni, 3) provide continuing education, 4) lend Notre Dame’s voice to national conversations, 5) strengthen the bonds of the Notre Dame family and its engagement in the world, and 6) have a little fun. It supports these goals in a quarterly print edition (circulation 160,000) whose range is as broad and diverse as the conversations taking place at a dynamic research university—while reflecting the moral, ethical, and spiritual elements essential to a Catholic institution of higher learning. It stands in two traditions—education and journalism—and so strives to entertain, inform, and edify.
From the Judges
Notre Dame knows how to play to its strength, which is extraordinary writing. The magazine also gets points for serving its audience: articles on issues such as the Parkland shooting, refugees at the border, and the carbon footprint of air travel do a good job of reflecting the Catholic tradition of social justice. A theme issue titled "Do You Believe It?" serves its audience brilliantly by exploring the concept of belief from many different angles. Overall, this entry took longer to judge than the others because it includes so much meaty, intriguing copy. Notre Dame alumni are fortunate to have a link back to their alma mater that inspires hope, does an outstanding job of being relevant to their lives today, and helps readers to meet the challenge of grappling with the world around us.
