Origami Inspires a New Meta-material
From the Nominator
This video describes a new material that might be able to change the way you experience a knock on the head, a fender-bender or an aircraft landing. Modeled on origami, this material would change the force travelling through the material into a slight “pulling away” feeling that could mitigate impact in helmets or landing gear. It’s a counter-intuitive idea, but a very exciting one. I was grateful to have our UW researchers’ beautiful origami-inspired models for visual interest in this story.
From the Judges
A solid research video with strong supportive b-roll. The articulating origami designs are fascinating. The content is educational and very interesting. The video is a strong example of how a single videographer can manage to research, produce and edit a complete research video that has impact and engages a wider audience.
