UGA Clinic Improves Lives of Children with Disabilities
From the Nominator
This short documentary features Madison, a participant in the University of Georgia’s Pediatric Exercise and Motor Development Clinic, which helps children with disabilities lead more active lives. Madison, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, has gained confidence and seen a boost in her strength and balance, thanks to a program at the clinic. At the clinic, Madison worked with Sydney Hollingsworth, a health and physical education major, on a personalized plan created to address Madison's unique needs. A voice-over interview from Madison’s mother explains the impact of this clinic on their family, while an interview with Sydney explains the goal of the program and the ways in which it benefits her own learning experience, as well as the community. Visuals follow a day-in-the life with Madison as she goes through her daily routine with her mother, leading up to and including a typical Motor Discipline Clinic session.
From the Judges
What this video does exceptionally well is celebrate the everyday moments in the life of its central character, Madison, and the people in her life. The close-ups of mom turning the steering wheel, the wind blowing through Madison's hair while she's riding in the backseat, the determination in her face while she's cycling—these tender moments tell more than any voiceover or talking head could. We liked that the connection to UGA was subtly placed at the end of the piece rather than hammered throughout. All in all, a beautiful video!
