From the Nominator
The new University of Rhode Island Magazine launched in fall 2018. Our aim was to transform our magazine by improving the print quality and magazine content in a way that makes readers want to open the magazine, stay with it, go back to it again, and share it. The goal, in a nutshell, was to put our readers first. We changed our name, visual identity, editorial architecture, and storytelling approach. We improved paper quality, switched to perfect binding, and added pages. The result is a a well-paced mix of creative content and great photography reflecting URI's unique personality. We invite readers into the intellectual life of the university and offer them stories about important topics and ideas that matter to them.
From the Judges
The redesign of the University of Rhode Island Magazine, although not dramatic in terms of rethinking strategy or shifting editorial focus, has nevertheless resulted in a notable elevation of the publication. The editor and art director, working within their existing budget, have refreshed their publication with vivid artwork, sophisticated design, and a more cohesive mix of stories. Their work has injected the magazine with depth and charm.
