When Your Body is Your Business
From the Nominator
"When Your Body is Your Business" tells the story of Olympic runner Alysia Montano's battle against the "pregnancy penalty" in professional sports. Shortly after the birth of her first child, Montano found out that Asics was cutting her sponsorship because she hadn't performed as well while pregnant as in previous years. The story traces Montano's transformation from a world-class athlete into a high-profile activist, as she ignores non-disclosure agreements to go public with her story and lobbies sports companies for fair treatment for athletes who are mothers. "When Your Body Is Your Business" has larger implications for mothers working outside of athletic arenas, especially when their work requires manual labor.
From the Judges
Fantastic piece about the intersection of business, entertainment, sports, culture, family, and perception. Wonderfully introduced through the experiences of an individual.
