From the Nominator
One of West Virginia University's core values is curiosity. We encourage our students, faculty and staff to explore new ways of doing things, which is exactly what we did with this ad for WVU Study Abroad. With study abroad opportunities in more than 70 countries, we wanted our viewers to not only see this ad in print, but to explore the ways WVU's study abroad program could help them create their own journey online and through video.
From the Judges
We thought this ad was very clever and a creative way to make a QR code front and center as the subject. It allowed us to experience, like the students, curiosity—imagining, anticipating all that awaits—and made us want to hover over the code too. It was a risk somewhat to use a QR code in a print ad, but it worked. We also liked that the background is not a bright and sunny day nor did the ad feature the typical cliché: a photo of a happy student studying abroad. This was very appropriate for the demographic.
