2021-2022 Viewbook
From the Nominator
The two-volume viewbook is ArtCenter’s primary recruitment tool for prospective students. The 2021-22 edition has three main duties: convey the key factors that differentiate the college from its peers; represent the institution’s core values; and emphasize individual experience. To convey both accessibility and transparency, this edition featured an organizing theme of “process.” Operating from a belief that highlighting only refined final work creates a barrier for some students—by overemphasizing seemingly unattainable results—this viewbook features text and imagery focusing more on the behind-the-scenes steps—sketching, trial and error, discussions, deliberations—involved in creating a project. Elements throughout the publication—visible printing artifacts, covers printed on uncoated kraft cover stock, Swiss binding, and exposed smythe-sewn book blocks—all reinforce the theme. Another process that receives special attention is the college’s desire to create a more equitable learning environment—an aspirational work-in-progress whose less-than-flattering history is presented transparently across several spreads.
From the Judges
A flagship publication for them, conveying serious design skills and prestige. Three-dimensional “objectness” of trim size and Swiss binding and exposed seems makes it stand out. Uncoated craft cover stock is cool. Book conveys a strong sense of identity and the culture of this school. Interesting graphic design overlay with photos. Impact conveys quality. A beautiful, practical keepsake publication.
